Death of Ex Coxswain 

of Penlee Lifeboat

The Death occurred at the West Cornwall Hospital on Monday of Mr. Thomas Ellis Vingoe of Penwith House, St Peters Hill, Newlyn aged 79.

    Mr. Vingoe was a well known figure in the village for many years. Hr owned and skippered his own fishing boat the "Carina" PZ 473, and his knowledge of local fishing grounds, various marks etc. was vast. Particularly in the Mounts bay area. He retired some years ago.

    From 1900 onwards he was the Vice Coxswain of Penzance lifeboat and afterwards became Coxswain of Penlee Lifeboat when she was stationed at Newlyn. While in charge at Newlyn Mr. Vingoe was responsible for a particular gallant deed when through his fine seamanship the crew of a three masted Barque, the "Saluto" which was driven ashore in a strong gale in Mounts Bay were all rescued. Mr Vingoe brought his boat close to the wreck and the men were able to jump to safety.

For rescuing a young boy from drowning in Newlyn Harbour he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Life Saving Certificate.

Mr Vingoe leaves four sons (one in South Africa), and a daughter. His familiar figure will be missed in and around Newlyn, especially on the fish market and pier. The funeral took place Wednesday the 7th of October 1953.
